Below you’ll find details about getting to Lake City and the ceremony venue
Getting there
Accommodations
The Ceremony is held at Peninsula Park. Drive two miles south of Lake City on Highway 149 (aka Gunnison Ave when in Lake City). After two miles, you will see a sign for Lake San Cristobal Recreational Area. Take the slight right at this sign onto Highway 30, which is a gravel road that takes you along the river toward the lake. After another two miles, you will see a sign that says “Boat Launch Facility”. Take a left into the parking lot and walk up the hill where you should see the ceremony set up. If using Google Maps, enter “Hinsdale County Boat Dock” and this will lead you to the venue.
Getting to Lake City
Lake City is located on Highway 149 in Southwestern Colorado. If flying to Colorado, you can fly into Denver, Gunnison/Crested Butte, or Montrose
Driving Time to Lake City
from Downtown Denver 255 miles (5 hours)
from Gunnison 55 miles (1 hour)
from Montrose 80 miles (2 hours)
All major routes to Lake City are paved and can be driven with a 2WD vehicle. If driving from Denver, be prepared to drive over multiple mountain passes. Although Colorado weather can be unpredictable, the chance of encountering snow in August is low.
*If you are driving from Montrose, there is a bridge closure you need to be mindful of when planning your travels. Please check for the latest updates on the US 50 Blue Mesa Bridge Closure Project.
We recommend staying near the center of town, so that you are within walking distance of the reception venue (Moseley Arts Center). The following had availability from 8/23 to 8/25 as of 7/4/2024:
Lake City Lodge (currently listed at $160 a night)
Bushwhack Lodge (currently listed around $300 a night)
Moose Track Shack (currently listed at $140 a night)
Rocky Top Log Cabin (currently listed at $250 a night, 3 beds, sleeps 6)
VRBO cabin (currently listed at $250 a night, 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4…a little further from the center, but still walkable)
On the Way to Lake City
Whether you are looking for a break on they way to Lake City, or a place to stay the night, her are some recommendations:
Denver - If you are coming from the airport or driving along I-70 and need a place to eat, here are some recommendations not far off of I-70
Stanley Marketplace - food hall with additional full service restaurants ranging from quick eats (bagels, empanadas) to James Beard award winners (Annette)
Globe Hall - this is our favourite music venue, which also serves meat and veg BBQ options
Berkeley neighborhood (Tennyson Street) - lots of restaurants and breweries, also a good area for shopping. Laura recommends Parisi.
Morrison - You may want to take a quick detour to visit the Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater. Red Rocks is typically free to explore prior to 2 PM. If you have enough time to see a concert, Denver’s Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats play the Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the wedding, John Fogerty playing the Monday after the wedding and Khruangbin the next two nights.
Fairplay - This town is credited as being the real life inspiration for South Park. You’ll see “South Park” on the names of businesses in this area because you’re driving through southern Park County
Buena Vista - You will come to a fork in the road about halfway along the drive to Lake City. Taking a left will keep you on Hwy 285 toward Lake City. If you take a right, you will enter the town of Buena Vista, which is a great place to take a break. As the name suggests, the town features beautiful views of the collegiate peaks. Buena Vista recommendations include:
Simple Eatery - A great lunch spot (soups, sandwiches, salads) with an outdoor patio
Wesley and Rose Patio Bar - This is a restaurant in the lobby of the Surf Hotel. We recently went and the food and drinks are great!
